Apple Cinnamon Sticks

Boxed crackers and cookies fill the supermarket aisles but often contain things you don't want your child eating or conflict with your child's dietary needs. These homemade treats are a great way to give them something crunchy without ingredients you can't pronounce. Bonus: grated apple and wheat germ make these extra nutritious.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all purpose flour (or sub GF flour)
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons wheat germ
  • ½ cup grated apple (original recipe says peeled, I didn’t bother)
  • 2 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil (I used grapeseed)

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Place the flour, baking powder, brown sugar, wheat germ, and cinnamon in a bowl and stir to combine.

Step 2

Add the grated apple to the flour mixture and toss to coat the apple.

Step 3

Add the oil and work the dough with your hands until it comes together. This will take 2-3 minutes. Work the dough until it is smooth.

Step 4

Shape the dough into a flat rectangle and let it rest 1-2 minutes. Roll it out 1/2 inch thick on parchment or a clean, dry surface.

Step 5

Cut the dough into sticks, 2 inches long by ¼ inch wide or cut out shapes with a cookie cutter.

Step 6

Bake for 20 minutes or until golden (Mine took about 17 minutes) Cool and serve. These will keep 3-4 days on the counter in an airtight container.
