Fourth of July Ice Chalk

Here’s a 4th of July craft your kids will love! Today we made erupting ice chalk paint and the kids had a blast! We used red, white, and blue to celebrate Independence Day.

  • 1/3 c baking soda
  • 1/3 c cornstarch
  • 1/3 c water
  • a healthy squeeze of paint (we used watercolor paints from another project) or food coloring

Step 1

Prepare your bowls!

Step 2

Mix the ingredients for each color paint in a separate bowl.

Step 3

Mix good!

Step 4

Pour into ice cube trays and freeze.

Step 5

When everything is frozen, pop the cubes out.

Step 6

It helps to wet down the concrete before starting to draw with the chalk, it melts better.

Step 7

After drawing for a while, you’ll want to make the ice chalk paint erupt. I gave the kids squeeze bottles filled with white vinegar and let them squeeze onto the melting ice chalk paint.

Step 8

When you’re done playing, you could give the kids the water hose to spray off all the chalk...and maybe spray themselves of too. Have a Happy Fourth of July!!
